The first recommendation is for "Chapeau!" in San Francisco, located on Clement Street. They serve classic bistro French fare at very reasonable prices. The food and service are excellent, though sometimes slow, which is not a bad thing if you want to socialize. They don't rush you. There is a Monday-Thursday early bird special that is an outright bargain. It is always packed (with people from the neighborhood), so reservations are advised.
Also on Clement Street is "Bai Som" which is a Thai restaurant open for both lunch and dinner. Again, food and service are great, and prices are very reasonable. My favorites there are: duck/pineapple fried rice, Tom Kar Kai soup, BBQ chicken, and the peanut sauce. They will make the dishes as spicy or mild as you request. Also, nice atmosphere.
For amazing dim sum, especially on Sunday afternoon, I suggest Tong Kiang on Geary Boulevard near 22nd Avenue. Because Sunday is a Chinese family day for eating out, you will probably have to wait in line, but it is worth it. The restaurant is also open for dinner all week, and the food (especially Hakka dishes, seafood, and vegetables) is very good. The restaurant is cleaner and has a better ambiance than many Chinese restaurants in SF, yet their prices are about the same. The reason to specifically go there, however, is for the dim sum. Again, worth the wait and fun.
If you want pizza, there are two fine pizza places in the Richmond District of SF. The first is Gaspare's on Geary Boulevard. It is family owned and the atmosphere is a throwback to the 50's Italian style: plastic grapes from the ceiling, classic Italian songs on the jukeboxes at each booth.
The pizza crust is thin and hand-tossed. The toppings are of high quality. The prices are very reasonable. I think they may be open for lunch; for sure they are open at dinner, and they stay open longer than most other restaurants in SF.
The other pizza place is "Greco Romana" on Clement Street and 26th Avenue. They make a very tasty pizza, and though a bit more expensive than Gaspare's, it is still competitive with higher-end chains such as Round Table. The dining area is small and not terribly inspiring, but clean. I particularly like their Greek sausage, grilled eggplant, and kalamata olive ingredients on my pizza. My daughter used to refer to it as "pizza with an attitude." Other than a few other Greek-style dishes, such as the Gyros, I don't recommend it for anything other than pizza. Again, not sure whether or not they're open for lunch.
San Francisco has amazingly good restaurants - from little storefronts to elegant dining establishments. The best Chinese food is found in the Richmond District, not Chinatown. Yet, in general, the best Japanese food is in Japantown, except for Sushi, which tends to be found in nthe more "yuppie" areas of the city, such as the northern Fillmore Street area and the Castro. The Castro/Market Street neighborhood has some amazingly good restaurants which are in a predominantly gay neighborhood, which is great if you are not judgmental, but which might offend the sensibilities of someone who has a prejudice about that.
Ironically, seafood restaurants are not a strength of SF, though many individual restaurants do a nice job with their seafood entrees. Just avoid Fishermans Wharf, where the food is mostly generic and overpriced, and the dining room is filled with tourists.
And last, but not least, the Mission District (Valencia, Guerrero, Mission Streets, etc.) is home to a plethora of Mexican and Central American cuisines, many of very high quality. Ask a hip-looking local for their recommendations. Oh, that reminds me: There is a very good Vietnamese dinner place called "Sunflower" in the Mission District. Atmosphere is mundane, but food is excellent.
Happy dining!!

(frequent?). help, saya perlu pencerahan nih next few months saya bakal spend quite a lot of time di sf. tapi transportasinya ngebingungin banget. saya lagi mikir mo beli sepeda aja

transportasinya emang banyak gob, tapi tergantung di daerah mana. ada beberapa daerah yg di hills kamu perlu cable cars (krn biasanya cuman cable cars sama bus yg lewat daerah situ), lain lagi kalo kamu agak off downtown bisa pakai Muni (kyk train/bus di dalem sf), kalo di luar Sf i.e. Daly City, Oakland kamu bisa pakai Subway (disini dibilangnya Bart).
Masa sih ngebingungin? menurutku NYC lebih ngebingungin. hahaha..Transport nya reliable banget kok, datengnya sering banget 5-15 menit. Kalau bus/ Muni, ada fare nya $45 sebulan. Kalo cable car, duh lupa brp cuman mahal si itu $3 one way. Bart jugee samaa... Ga disaranin deh naik Bart, sekarang gw naek bart sih. cuman duhh suka bauuu.. Mending Muni kemana2.
Sepeda jg asik tuh Gob. disini banyak yg commute naik sepeda. Gw pengen scooter, cuman dr tempat gw jauh banget bs gempor naik scooter.
Emang mau tinggal di daerah mana?

subway nyc sih emang banyak linenya, tapi sistemnya kan disatukan, dan applicable buat bis juga. sedangkan sf banyak line tapi ga nyatu, banyak jenis lagi makanya ngebingungin.
saya juga lagi mikir antara sepeda ato scooter kecil itu (yang pake kaki itu loh, lol ), abis speda kalo mo angkat2 ke bart kan susah banget. saya baru ketemu apt di daerah east bay, 1 block away dari lake merritt, gimana sih daerah situ? ga rawan kan? dan ke sf pasti harus pake bart sih. trus sempat liat AC transit lagi, which i have to find out what it is

Gob elo bkln sering2 commute ke downtown Sf gak? Itu jauh lho
emang ke sf rencananya mo ngapain Gob, mungkin gw bs bantu kasi daerah yg pas
Gw kurang tau daerah Oakland sih, daerah deket Lake Meritt itu spt apa. Tapi kalo uda daerah Oakland, gw ga saranin yah.
But terserah elo sih. heheh.. hope this helps

southbay jauh banget donk? kamu tinggal di mana sih be?
sala satu alasan saya ambil east bay, karena kayanya dengan duit yang sama, i could get more di eastbay daripada sf, (sama kaya milih mo queens/brooklyn dibandingkan manhattan kali ya ). AND, east bay kayanya lebih hangat dikit dibandingkan sf *im getting old, tulang ga kuat dingin2 mulu*
masa sih oakland segettho itu? i heard west oakland memang ghetto. due to time constraint kemaren nyari tempat, saya udah deal ambil tempat di deket lake merritt itu nih telat donk termasuk downtown oakland kayanya. major street di sana memang keliatan ghetto (19th st/broadway), tapi saya lebih ke daerah perumahan deket lake merritt sih, which has nice view of the lake. kemaren saya jalan2 di old oakland (12th st and below), lumayan cakep kok neighborhoodnya dan trus deket jack london (cuman some parts rada industrial, yang sepertinya mereka lagi nyoba gentrify daerah situ into something more residential). in the end saya pilih yang di deket lake merritt, soalnya it has the best amenities dibandingkan tempat2 laen yang saya liat. so, yah, we shall see moga2 saya ga ditembak di tengah jalan deh
saya perlu tempat yang mempunyai easy access ke daerah financial district, dan downtown oakland ngga terlalu jauh kayanya. commutenya isnt too bad sih, cuman sekitar 10-15 menitan from station to station, then plus walking. mungkin sambil ngebandingin nyc sih, di mana commute selalu antara at least 30-45 mins, jadi yang ini isnt too bad at all (cuman perlu jalan lagi, or better, pake scooter lipat itu kali ) dan iya tuh, bart can be quite expensive, one way udah hampir 3 dolar. i wonder apa ada diskon ga but then, dalam sebulan saya mungkin hanya 2 minggu di situ sih, jadi ga selalu spend entire month di sana.
trus yang kamu bilang $45perbulan, itu yang pass by month itu ya? temen saya di sf ada tunjukin passnya (ga tau sama ngga dengan yang kamu maksud), yang cara kerjanya, katakan biarpun kamu mau memakai pass on the 25th, kamu tetep harus beli for the entire month (yang valid from 1st of the month). itu sama ga sih? trus ada pass per week ga?
