In case you hadn't noticed, August is upon us, which means our minds are busy brainstorming about all of fall's new looks and determining which seasonal accoutrements must be ours. That said, while this summer month is close to the official start of autumn, it's definitely not a transitional time in terms of temperature. So while daydreaming about the upcoming trends is perfectly fine, it's also important to consider the here-and-now and create wonderful weather-appropriate outfits. Obviously this can be a tricky task, so it's no wonder that this installment of What Was She Wearing: Answers! features a quartet of darling dressers who manage to work next season's key trends into their ensembles while still staying cool in the summer heat! Read on for the details about the girls you asked about and don't forget to send us your most pressing celebrity-style questions!
Taylor Momsen
Gossip Girl-star Taylor Momsen rocked her signature pretty-in-punk style while attending the Grand Sephora Times Square opening in New York City late last month. Her Torn by Ronny Kobo Brooke Draped Plaid Top ($88), worn over micro-shorts, is a great way to get a breezy look on a hot summer night while simultaneously alluding to fall. Add interest the ensemble with a great pair of peep-toe embellished boots, like Momsen's Tania Spinelli Open Toe Zipper Booties ($830, 212.391.0050) or BCBGirl's Chester Boots ($129), and your favorite metallic accessories. Finish off the look with some dramatic eye-makeup and a devil-may-care attitude, and you'll have Momsen's insouciance down pat!
Rachel Bilson
Recently spotted attending an Express event in Los Angeles, Rachel Bilson was just as put-together and polished as ever. InStyle's newest contributor wore a Jean Paul Gaultier dress from the French designer's Resort 09 collection, Express' Long Boyfriend Jacket ($80), and Christian Louboutin's Patent Simple Pumps ($735) in tan. To get the New York, I Love You-actress' lovely look, try Jean Paul Gaultier's Bell-Sleeve Dressicon ($255), which bears a striking resemblance to Bilson's designer printed-pick, or the Open-Back Dress ($88) by Reformed (a collaboration between Urban Outfitters and one of our favorite LA boutiques, The Reformation!). Complete your Bilson-inspired ensemble by adding your favorite oversized boyfriend blazer, a great pair of nude heels—like Aldo's Moos Pumps ($90)—and unfussy hair and makeup for a relaxed and red-carpet ready look!
Chloe Sevigny
Downtown darling Chloe Sevigny showed off her independent sartorial spirit while attending the BlackBerry Tour launch party at the Thompson Hotel in Manhattan's Lower East Side. Our readers (and our editors!) are crazy about the Big Love-star's Jacob Long Sleeve Dress ($575, 323.655.2142) by up-and-coming LA-designer Kimberly Ovitz, as it is wonderful proof that a long sleeve mini, especially a nude one, can provide coverage and supreme sex appeal! However, the most asked-after element of this ensemble is easily the shoes; specifically her Chloe Sevigny for Opening Ceremony Buckle Boots ($625). These heavily embellished boots might be the perfect shoes for fall, as they would look amazing with anything from a pair of cuffed jeans to a sexy shift. This particular style is already almost sold out, so in the event that you can't get your hands on a coveted pair, we recommend trying the Elastic Wedge Booties ($525), also from Sevigny's Opening Ceremony line, or, for those of you who are a bit more budget-conscious, Jeffrey Campbell's Potion Wedges ($180). Just mix them with a nude mini like Topshop Boutique's Ribbed Dress ($110) and a long-strap petite purse, like Urban Renewal's Leather Chain Strap Bag ($38), for a lovely look-a-like result!
Diane Kruger
Diane Kruger was all smiles while doing some shopping in her native Germany last week. While window-shopping in Berlin may be the source of Kruger's delight, her bold and colorful outfit was enough to keep our readers content! The Inglorious Basterds-actress combined Stella McCartney's V-Neck T-shirt ($375, 212.206.3928) and Graded Striped Cobalt Skirt ($945, 310.273.7051), both from the designer's Resort 2010 collection. Of course, for those of you who want a more wallet-friendly rendition of Kruger's look—or simply one that's available now—we found some wonderful alternatives! For example, Silence & Noise's Sheer Texture Boucle Skirt ($58) is a brilliant base for any ensemble and would look just as chic with a bright loose-fit top, like American Apparel's Sheer Rib Scoop Tee ($30). Though the fashion-industry favorite wore a quilted Chanel handbag, we like Topshop's Quilted Piped Cross Body Bag ($50) just as much! Just add on a few razzle-dazzle accents like Urban Outfitter's Dagger Necklace ($38) and N.Y.L.A.'s Scanty Woven Flats ($70) in multi metallic, and you'll be golden!

Lately, like many other people in the world, we've had Scarlett Johansson on our minds. But unlike the fanboys who are thrilled by her upcoming part in Iron Man 2, we're excited about her recent role as the face of Dolce & Gabbana's new beauty line, The Make Upicon. In regards to the latter, while the products are absolutely amazing (watch this space for more details), the outfits Johansson wears while promoting said collection are just as noteworthy. Her recent spate of event-ensembles is truly inspiring, whether the pieces are demure (like the Dolce & Gabbana Summer Flowers Silk Top ($330) she wore for a promotional appearance at Selfridges in London) or devastating (such as the lace-and-mesh Christian Louboutin for 3.1 Phillip Lim booties she wore at Comic-Con). In honor of these enviable looks, we've devoted today's content to Johansson, as we play another round of What Would She Wear?
When dreaming up Johansson-inspired outfits and looking for items we imagine she'd love, we first had to decide which of the actress' many style-personas we wanted to channel. These days, her red-carpet look is usually comprised of a minimalist ensemble—a fitted sheath dress here, a décolletage-bearing blouse there—that is tantalizingly enriched with a dynamite accessory or two. Additionally, she almost always pays respect to old-Hollywood, whether that's with a sexed-up pair of stilettos or simply by playing up her hourglass curves with a sharp belt.
Of course, no matter how flawless her frock is, a hint of Johansson's free-spirited side always manages to peep through the movie-star glamour. Whether it's a glimpse of a brightly colored inner-forearm tattoo or flash of fluorescent polish, these small details hint at a rich off-duty life and suggest yet another side to her personal style.
All in all, these many facets are a lot to consider, but we were up for the challenge nevertheless! In fact, we found some excellent pieces that are perfectly in keeping with all aspects of the starlet's current style, so read on for all our discoveries and why they embody the spirit of Scarlett Johansson.
1. Alexander Wang Leopard Print Silk Blouse ($500)
We can completely envision Johansson emphasizing her sex-kitten style by wearing this animal-print blouse, designed by fashion-world darling Alexander Wang. The prim-and-proper Peter Pan collar contrasts nicely with the sassy pattern and would look chic tempered with a ladylike pencil skirt!
2. Elizabeth and James Open-Toe Ankle Boots icon($350)
Johansson is famous for her femme-fatale looks and her ability to wear some seriously risqué fashions. It is no wonder, then, that we think these lingerie-inspired booties from Elizabeth and James would be the perfect fit for the actress/singer. The metal-spike heel adds a little bit of edge to the pretty lace paneling and would make quite a statement paired with a simple dress or even just stovepipe jeans!
3. Paul & Joe Saphir Mini Skirt ($315)
Our muse du jour embraces bold hues—though usually in small doses—so we figured that this rich violet skirt would be the perfect way to incorporate Johansson's color preferences. The skirt is a relatively high-waisted style, which means it's an ideal selection for highlighting a feminine silhouette.
4. nubar Nail Lacquer ($7.50) in Green Tea
Though this shade might not seem like an obvious choice, we think it works for a number of reasons. First of all, green polish had serious presence on the fall runways (jade at Chanel, forest at Vena Cava). Secondly, we imagine that Johansson would approve of nubar's cruelty-free vegan formulas. Finally, the quirky color is just the sort of slightly subversive subtle touch we've come to expect from the actress.
5. Diane von Furstenberg Marlene Clutch ($550)
The second we saw this new clutch from DVF, we knew it would be a natural fit with today's subject. The snakeskin-embossed panels and hammered-metal accents are the sort of simple-but-punchy details that Johansson favors. Additionally, its design was inspired by one of the great silver-screen goddesses of all time—Marlene Dietrich—a fact that Johansson would surely appreciate.
6. Made Her Think Wrap Your Stones Earrings ($187)
When it comes to jewelry, Johansson rarely goes for necklaces or bracelets, but always finishes her look with an interesting pair of earrings. We selected this pair by Made Her Think because we loved the combination of Swarovski rhinestones and army-green silk: they're fancy but not fussy.
7. Diptyque Huiles Precieuses Precious Oils For Bodyicon ($78)
We hardly ever pay attention to non-fashion celebrity news, but we've noticed that Johansson has quietly and consistently supported the green movement for quite some time. In accordance with this earthy ethos, we decided to include this lovely bottle of organic body oil from Diptyque. The sulfate and paraben-free formula is made from sweet almond, argan, and macadamia nut oils and gives skin a gorgeous glow.

When it comes to summer dressing—especially for evening events—most people seem to insist on a less-is-more policy that might leave them feeling cool, but not looking particularly stylish. True, the temperature and humidity levels are spiking, but that doesn't mean you should throw on a lame look or overly revealing ensemble and call it a day (er, night). Rather than simply reaching for some boring standby outfit, we urge you to take inspiration from a few of our favorite ladies like Kate Moss, Rihanna, and Rachel Bilson. These lovelies show off some exceptional examples of how to look amazing and weather-appropriate even when it's sweltering outside. So sit back, grab a cool drink, and get ready to spend some time perusing a few festive after-hours outfits in today's edition of What They Wear: Hot Summer Night!*
Rihanna
Rihanna is fast becoming just as well known for her daring dressing choices as her chart-topping hits. Seen out and about in Manhattan earlier this summer, the songstress proved that one fail-proof way to stay cool in the city is to mix your favorite dark body-con pieces with oversized separates. To try out a similar look, we suggest pairing a sherbet-hued blouse like ASOS' Silk Envelope Sleeve Top ($60) with either Sass & Bide's On A Night Like This Skirt ($165) or Forever 21's Liquid Mini Skirt ($13). Another warm-weather tip: a generous helping of statement accessories will add interest to an outfit without weighing you down. Though Rihanna opted for Fallon's Mixed Deadly Pearls Necklace ($198) and Maison Martin Margiela's Ankle Boots ($775), we recommend Forever 21's Twisted Beaded Necklace ($7), and Enzo Angiolini's Rachey Booties ($120) to get you where you want to go!
Kate Moss
Though layering is often associated with winter dressing, Kate Moss proves that combining a few strategic semi-sheer pieces can be the perfect antidote to a steamy summer night. The industry icon and risk-taker—knee-high boots in July, anyone?—stopped by a local restaurant after taking in a Blur concert in London, looking lacy and racy in Clare Tough's embroidered top. Though her crafty crème blouse is from the up-and-comer's S/S 09 collection and no longer available, we recommend you check out the entire line (with supporters like Moss, and appearances in influential glossies like Jalouse, i-D, UK Elle, it's sure to be one to watch!). To achieve Moss' breezy mix, toss Splendid's Rib Feather Tencel Wrap ($99) over Free People's Flutter Fly Away Top ($78) and slip into a pair of short-shorts for a rocking summer-appropriate selection!
Miranda Kerr
Many fashionable stars came out to celebrate Louis Vuitton's fête commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the Lunar Landing in New York City (for you history buffs, Apollo 11 landed in 1969, and for all of you photography lovers, check out Annie Leibovitz's Louis Vuitton ads starring Buzz Aldrin who was on that famous flight). Back on Earth, the out-of-this-world beautiful Victoria Secret model looked stellar in the French luxury label's one-of-a-kind brocade dress and African Queen Bag ($1530, 866.884.8866). Kerr is a shining example of how a light-reflecting fabric can really elevate a cocktail dress into a truly memorable evening ensemble. Try 3.1 Phillip Lim's Ruffle Front Belted Silk Dressicon ($650) for a like-minded style (ruffles! belting!) in a violet palette or Nanette Lepore's Cafe Sheath Dress ($348) with a festive clutch like Foley + Corinna's Classic City Clutch ($311) to get a semblance of her late-night style.
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley
While out and about with friends in London earlier this month, former GOTM and WhoWhatWear.com reader favorite looked effortlessly chic in a sweet delicate floral patterned Topshop dress, vintage leather jacket, and Christian Louboutin's Tuba 50 Leather Boots ($1370). Though her frock and motorcycle jacket are not available, we found some wonderful alternatives for you to consider. Nom De Plume's YaYa Floral Minidress ($88) mimics Huntington-Whiteley's pick and provides a refreshing contrast to her more rough-and-tough pieces. Simply slip it on with ASOS' Cropped Leather Jacket ($171) and Frye's Dorado Antique Riding Boots ($458) and you're all set for a night on the town!
Cassie
Singer Cassie, who was also on the Louis Vuitton 40th Anniversary of the Lunar Landing's red carpet, showed us that a sheer fabric can be a fresh and chic choice for a balmy evening event. While the songbird wore Louis Vuitton's Small Ribbon Skirt ($5692, 866.884.8866) and Crew Neck Knit Top ($1273), you can easily achieve her airy ensemble by wearing American Apparel's Nylon Micro-Mesh Body Suit ($26)—over your favorite pretty bandeau bra—with a balloon skirt or Free People's Tiered Ruffle Mini ($58). Though Cassie stepped out in Christian Louboutin's Open-Toe Bootieicon ($1195), we like these Merrie Pumps ($90) from Steve Madden, which are just as heavenly and available at a more reasonable price point!
Rachel Bilson
The always impeccable Rachel Bilson was spotted sporting this summer's chic cocktail-shorts trend while attending a Vogue-hosted party to celebrate the first anniversary of Los Angeles' 3.1 Phillip Lim store. Though there is clearly a lot going on in this outfit, she pulls it off effortlessly and sets a great example. Seen here in head-to-toe 3.1 Phillip Lim—specifically the label's Rose Gold Liquid Lamé Relaxed Twisted Cuffed Harem Shorts ($350, 310.358.1988), Rose Gold Liquid Lamé Double-Breasted Peaked Lapel Blazer ($750), Silk Henley Ruffle Top ($325), and Black Leather Braided Low Waist Belt ($225) —the overall effect of this ensemble is light, fun, and festive. While we are huge fans of this look, we know that it may be a little hard for us civilians to pull of, as lamé shorts-suits can be unforgiving on less-than perfect frames (plus, how many tasteful lamé suits are there?). Instead take a page from Bilson's notebook: either pick a delightful pair of chic shorts with a beautiful blouse or opt for a little lamé to add a splash of attention-grabbing shimmer! As far as tops are concerned, we are quite taken with Maje's Kaza Lurex Jacket ($525), which would look sassy with a neutral-hued pair of cocktail shorts. Or you can razzle dazzle in Gryphon's The Sequin Shorts ($370) with a toned-down top. All are stellar options, but please, leave wearing multiple metallic-on-metallic pieces together to the professionals, like Bilson!—KM
