Last time , The embassy need 6 months to approve my VISA. So if you want to go to US, you better start to apply your VISA as soon as possible.

yes, thats true. why? it has soemthing to do with the belief that the US embassy has about the connection between women and terrorism. they believe a woman cant be a terrorist :p. so lucky u girls :p ;).
yeah, ive also heard that.... taking 6 months to get ur visa. i was lucky to get it within 1 month.....i applied for my visa like a few months before they freezzed the old policy and change it to this new one :p.
about the cost of study? well, i do agree it is pretty expensive. but if your parents can afford it, why not? you dont have to go to top universities. u can look around for some cheaper univs.
or, alternatively, u can go into some small colleges first, and then transfer to a bigger university, like many ppl do :).
usually these small colleges have connection with bigger university in their respective states. so, its easier for u guys to get into the universtiy by first applying into the smaller college.
why choose American university? Well, I dunno :p. but from wat ive heard, i conclude that the work (generally) at an American university is relatively harder than in other country. and u gotta be more mature to stay alive in here:p.
but yeah, i like it here. i dun regret coming here :).

Capunk,
That is true. There are two year schools here in the US called "community colleges". After two years students can automatically transfer to universities if their grades are good enough. The benefit of community colleges are that these schools have no competitive admissions ( you only have to apply to get in). And most have guaranteed transfer policies worked out with public universities. Community college students in California can automatically tranfer to Berkeley if their grades are good enough.

ohhh it's similar with TAFE (Diploma) in Oz...after high school, u can apply to TAFE, stuck in there for two years and then u got credit so u can transfer to 2nd year uni
btw....AU$ is getting closer to US$....if later on US$=AU$ (nightmare) probably better off to US :p

yep. It took me one day to get approved last year... but my friend, he'a a guy and it took him a year before he can finally reach US, and it's after he spent 6 months in Singapore and apply from there.

Well, not that expensive actually. Like what Capunk've said, it depends on the university. There are many state/city universities with affordable tuitions. Of course not all of them have the same quality as NYU or Columbia, but there are some of them that offer the same quality :) Take me for example. Instead of paying 30k something/year, I just need to pay 2.15K/semester for the same quality as NYU :)

Harvard, Yale, and Princeton actually all have a 100% financial need met promise even for all overseas admits.
This means your family income will be reported to them - they determine from this a reasonable amount that you can afford to pay for tuition. The amount you can't afford will be covered by the school.

one of the disadvantages of applying into smaller colleges first (at least for indonesians), u only get 3 yr visa, instead of the usual 5 year visa. so once ur visa is expired, u cant go back to Indo if u want to :p.

Just want to put a note for financial aid...you can't get it on the first year. You have to pay your own way for the first year and make sure that you get good grades. If your GPA is not enough then you might qualified for loans instead of grants. You have to pay it back 6 months after you graduated.
I only have experiences in California where I had to fill up long paper works for FAFSA to determine the eligibility and had to attend one of the seminar that gives u all information about grants and loan.
Fortunately since I'm an asylee instead of foreign student, the fee is not as high. Because for state (Cal State and not UC) colleges there is a limit on how much you can get per semester. If you are a sophomore for example you are only eligible for $3,500 per year and it increases as you get to be a junior and senior.
If you do want to come here, first research all the resources you can get from the university/college ur going into. It is a great experience and you won't regret it. Even with limited english, you can take ESL classes to make things easier.
